Shouldn’t Celtic’s ‘invincibles’ be out of sight by now with Rangers in crisis?

COMMENT

Celtic’s long unbeaten domestic run finally came to an end on Sunday as Hearts routed Brendan Rodgers’ side 4-0 at Tynecastle.

After 69 games without defeat, 68 of them under Rodgers, Celtic tasted defeat against a Scottish club but it leaves one big question mark hanging over the defending champions.

Shouldn’t they be much further ahead with Rangers in crisis?

Despite losing 3-1 to St. Johnstone on Saturday, the Gers are still only five points behind their Old Firm rivals in the Scottish Premiership.

The Gers have been managerless since October 26th – 53 days ago – and have interim boss Graeme Murty at the helm for the second time in less than a year.

Home defeats to Hibernian, Hamilton, Celtic and St. Johnstone coupled with draws against Hearts and Kilmarnock should have seen Rangers miles off the pace compared to Rodgers’ all-conquering side.

With an Old Firm game at the end of the month, Rangers could close to within two points – or depending on other results before then even leapfrog – their bitter rivals.

As the transfer window nears opening, if Rangers’ director of football Mark Allen can get a few quality players to make the switch to Ibrox and whoever takes the reins for the second-half of the season can get just a little bit of consistency from the Light Blues then despite Celtic going on a run that some pundits have claimed will never be beaten there could still be a real title race this season.

Last season’s achievement of going the entire domestic campaign without a defeat was an incredible landmark to reach but this term, behind all the hype and praise there’s a distinctly average team.

In other Rangers news, Jim Duffy has urged the Gers to appoint this 59-year-old as soon as possible.
