Show some respect – Ibrox Exclusive: Ex-striker destroys senior player after Rangers reveal

Noel Whelan has ripped into Wes Foderingham after he lifted the lid on his time under Steven Gerrard at Rangers.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Aberdeen hitman has criticised the goalkeeper for airing his grievances after his departure from Ibrox.

The 29-year-old, who became a free agent this week, told Open Goal that he was “priced out” of leaving the club back in 2018 and that he was told he wasn’t Steven Gerrard’s “type of person”.

He joined Rangers in 2015 and played 143 times for the club, although only five of those appearances came this season.

Having seen the shot-stopper depart Ibrox at the end of his contract this week, Whelan has torn into Foderingham, insisting he should have kept his “mouth shut”.

Whelan told Football Insider: “I’m sure it’s frustrating but you signed a contract, it’s as simple as that, you’re under contract at a club and you can’t do too much about it.

“If a club needs you, you should be there to help them. It’s a squad of 22 – sometimes there are plenty of players that sit on the bench, they want to be playing but they’ve got to show their worth.

“Steven Gerrard showed he wasn’t going to be his number one and he brought another goalkeeper in. At the time you either sink or swim, you either fight or give up – that’s what you want to see from players. You want to see players fighting for their place and for the cause but you also want to see a team player.

“I’m sure he has been but deep down, when he comes out and says these sort of things, he sort of hasn’t, in a way. I’m sure he’s frustrated, everyone wants to play first-team football.

“From a professional purpose, he maybe should have kept his mouth shut, left the club with a bit of dignity and not b**** away and start criticising managers when you’re out the door.

“I don’t like to see that, leave with a bit of respect for the football club that have been paying you a very good wage and just look forward to your next venture.”
