'Significant problem' – Murty details worrying injury update on Rangers senior player
Rangers manager Graeme Murty has given a worrying update on Bruno Alves’ calf injury and admitted the defender has a “significant problem”.
The veteran defender won’t link up with his team-mates during their winter training camp in Florida as he remains in Portugal to receive treatment on the injury picked up in the 0-0 draw with Celtic in December.
The 36-year-old only lasted 17 minutes of the Old Firm clash before limping out and was photographed leaving Scotland on crutches.
Murty refused to put a timescale on how long Alves is likely to be sidelined for as he confirmed the Portuguese international’s setback.
“(Bruno) is staying in Portugal. He has a significant problem or disruption with his calf so he won’t be in America,” Murty said, as quoted by the Scottish Sun.
“He will receive treatment in Portugal. I have no real timescale on how long he might be out for.”
Alves has made 17 appearances for the Gers this season after after his summer move from Serie A side Cagliari.
The 94-times capped defender is under contract at Ibrox until the end of next season but could find himself on the way out in the January transfer window.
Alves is one of a number of senior players who have struggled to perform to expected levels and with a World Cup on the horizon, the European Championship winner could move to keep his World Cup dream alive.
The veteran has scored once for Rangers, netting a free-kick in the League Cup win over Dunfermline in August.
In other Rangers news, the Gers have tabled a six-figure bid for this international attacker.
