Simon Jordan digs at James Maddison in response to Jim White’s Daniel Levy claim

Simon Jordan has claimed that Tottenham Hotspur’s signing of James Maddison reveals the club’s limitations in competing at the very top of the Premier League.

The former Crystal Palace owner argued that Spurs are not yet capable of attracting the calibre of players needed to win the league, despite Maddison being a talented addition to their squad.

Jordan explained on talkSPORT (1:40):“I think the real issue is the kind of players that you buy and the kind of players that the funds that are made available allow you to buy. What Ange Postecoglou can’t do.”

In response, Jim White pointed out, “Well, it’s on Daniel, isn’t it?” referencing Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy’s responsibility for squad building.

Jordan elaborated, It’s on most football clubs. So how much, there’s only a few football clubs who are spending all amounts of money, probably about three or four. Spurs spend a decent amount of money. If you want to be a Premier League winner, they’re going to have to spend more money and get a different calibre of player.”

He then used James Maddison as an example to underline his argument, stating, “You buy players like James Maddison, who are very technically gifted players. But I don’t think he’d get in Man City’s side. I don’t think he’d get in Liverpool’s side. I don’t think he’d get in Arsenal’s side. And these are the teams that are potentially going to win leagues. But he’ll get into Spurs’ side because he’s technically a very good player.”

Tottenham are better with Maddison

The Englishman has elevated Spurs’ midfield since he arrived at the London club last season from Leicester for £40 million.

His brace against Man City was a masterclass in creativity and clinical finishing, as he dominated the centre of midfield and proved his ability to shine against elite opposition as Tottenham beat their rivals 4-0.

The 28-year-old’s 21 goal involvements in 41 Premier League games for the London club highlight his attacking prowess, offering Ange postecoglou a cutting edge they often lacked in recent seasons. His link-up play with Heung-Min Son has been pivotal, with the duo combining to break down defences and produce moments of brilliance.

Without Maddison, the Tottenham lose their creative spark, as seen in their 2-1 home loss to Ipswich. When Rodrigo Bentancur, Pape Matar Sarr, and Dejan Kulusevski take the reins, Spurs appear disjointed and toothless in attack.

Maddison’s presence elevates Spurs, turning them into a side capable of matching and outplaying top-tier teams. Spurs currently sit seventh in the league and are three points of the top four.
