Sky Sports pundit: My sources tell me Celtic man in line to join Arsenal

By Richard Parks

Sky Sports pundit Davie Provan has claimed that Brendan Rodgers is firmly in the running to become the next Arsenal manager.

Arsene Wenger’s 22-year reign is likely to end this summer following a wretched season for the Gunners in which they have slipped well behind the top-four places in the Premier League.

Rodgers has been touted as potential candidate to succeed Wenger following two successful seasons in Scotland, in which Celtic have totally dominated the domestic game.

The Hoops closed in on a seventh consecutive Scottish Premiership title after winning 2-1 at Hamilton on Sunday afternoon and remain on course for a second treble in successive campaigns.

“English hacks assure me Brendan Rodgers is well in the frame to succeed Arsene Wenger at Arsenal in the summer,” Provan wrote in his weekly Scottish Sun column. “Hoops punters should enjoy him while they can.”

Football Insider verdict:

Little wonder that Rodgers is in the running to replace Wenger. Many observers south of the border will sniffily regard his Celtic tenure, in which they have totally dominated the Scottish game as ‘only to be expected’, given the struggles of Rangers in recent years. But that would demonstrate a lack of due diligence in what Rodgers has achieved. Celtic are on the verge of consecutive domestic clean sweeps, an unprecedented achievement in Scottish football, while Rodgers has also overseen two Champions League campaigns. The football has been easy on the eye, and the northern Irishman has nurtured some top young talent while transforming the team’s fortunes, Kieran Tierney, Moussa Dembele, Odsonne Edouard, Kristoffer Ajer and Olivier Ntcham, to name but a few.

In other Celtic news, the club are in pole position to sign a £7million-valued ‘phenomenal’ 6ft 1in player.
