Sky Sports pundit delivers verdict on Tottenham’s summer window

By Harvey Byrne

Sky Sports pundit and former manager Graeme Souness has claimed that Tottenham have stood still this summer while clubs around them have only got stronger.

The north London side have impressed many in recent seasons after achieving third and second placed finishes in their last two campaigns.

However, Spurs have not brought in a single player this summer with the only major deal at the club seeing Kyle Walker depart in a mega-money transfer to Manchester City.

Champions Chelsea have brought in Alvaro Morata, Antonio Rudiger and Tiemoue Bakayoko to their side, while both Manchester United and Arsenal have added Romelu Lukaku and Alexandre Lacazette to their forward lines.

This has left Souness believing that Tottenham have been left behind and he has insisted that in the past the top clubs have all gone out and brought in big players in order to challenge for the Premier League title.

“Pochettino can make all the noises about relying on youth development and having a great set-up in place – but all the great teams that are winning trophies have good talent coming through and also go out and buy big players to complement what they’ve got,” told Souness, as quoted by the Sky Sports website.

“They should have been buying serious players to make sure they had the finished article in two or three positions and then they could have been real challengers for the Premier League and the Champions League. Instead, they have stood still while everyone around them has got stronger. As a player you want better players coming in as it benefits the club.”

This time last summer Tottenham had already added both Victor Wanyama and Vincent Janssen to their ranks before bringing in Georges-Kevin N’Koudou and Moussa Sissoko on deadline day.

However, the club may now be more conserved on who they recruit this summer with only Wanyama so far proving a success out of the four aforementioned names.

In other Tottenham news, Ian Wright has named more Spurs players than Arsenal in his 2017-18 dream team.
