Sky Sports studio explode at Matheus Cunha in Wolves v Bournemouth: ‘Is he stupid?’

Matheus Cunha left the entire panel astonished in the Sky Sports studio following an outrageous moment during the FA Cup clash between Wolves and Bournemouth on Saturday.

Cunha, who has been linked with Man United, had already stunned Paul Merson after scoring a fantastic goal on the hour mark, evening up the tie following Evanilson’s first-half opener on 1 March.

Joao Gomes, Dean Huijsen, Nelson Semedo, Jorgen Strand Larsen, Alex Scott and Rayan Ait-Nouri had all been shown yellow cards in normal time, and the cards continued to be dished out.

Referee Chris Kavanagh certainly had no other option on this occasion, however, as Cunha lashed out at Milos Kerkez right at the end of extra time, with the Brazilian seeing red, metaphorically and in terms of card colour.

The Cherries’ defender was also booked for the incident, but with the Wolves star hitting out at the opposition in a moment of anger, the referee was forced to take action.

Those watching on from the Sky Sports studios could not quite believe what they were watching unfold.

Matheus Cunha sees red in chaotic Wolves v Bournemouth moment

Speaking live via Sky Sports Soccer Saturday [1 March, 5:37pm], Paul Merson said: “Cunha’s been sent off for a full house. He’s called offside, they’re trying to get the ball off him, so he punches Kerkez.

“He goes down, kicks him, Kerkez gets up and [Cunha] headbutts him – full house, whole lot. The referee has a talk and gives him a red card, and he cannot believe it. It’s unbelievable. He can’t believe it, arguing with the ref and the linesman as well.”

Michael Dawson, in amazement, continued: “That is absolutely ridiculous. It’s pathetic. Is he stupid? We talk about how talented he is, but doing that is just ridiculous.”

Wolves star lets his teammates down at key moment

Football Insider verdict

With Andoni Iraola‘s team eventually winning the penalty shootout and advancing to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup, Cunha has well and truly let his teammates down.

Of course, Wolves would not have even been in extra time had it not been for his outrageous strike in normal time, but there was potential for Vitor Pereira’s team to finally have a positive moment.

Instead, Wolves have been knocked out of the FA Cup and are languishing in 17th in the Premier League table, just five points above the relegation zone.

Wolves are not safe from the relegation zone.

With 13 goals and four assists in the Premier League this season, the team would likely be stuck in the relegation zone, but after his recent antics, fans might not be so sad to see the back of him in the summer.

Mick Brown told Football Insider that Cunha is likely to leave Wolves because he can be one of the league’s best players on his day, but the emotional side to his game means he can often let his teammates down.
