Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino looks on from the sidelines

By Harry Sykes

Tottenham ended their pursuit of Estudiantes defender Juan Foyth after Mauricio Pochettino insisted the asking price was too high, according to a report.

Sky Sports claimed on their website that Spurs manager Pochettino was put off by the £8million valuation placed on the 19-year-old’s head.

It is said he called off the pursuit following advanced negotiations even though Spurs are in the market for a centre-half this summer.

Sky report that Tottenham face a major battle to land another defender target after Ajax insisted they do not want to cash in on Davinson Sanchez.

There has been speculation that the London club’s pursuit of the Colombia international, 21, is a ‘done deal’ for a fee of around £35million but the broadcaster claims that is “premature”.

Sanchez was left out of the Dutch side’s Eredivisie opener on Saturday because manager Marcel Keizer and sporting director Marc Overmars felt he was not focused enough amid the uncertainty over his future.

Spurs are yet to buy anyone so far this summer, a situation causing concern for fans and players, judging by the comments of defender Danny Rose.

Pochettino insisted in the aftermath of Tottenham’s opening-day Premier League win over Newcastle on Sunday that his side will be active before the 31 August transfer deadline amid reports that they will make three new signings.

Football Insider verdict:

Forget the facile win over Newcastle. The pressure is on the Spurs top brass to strengthen a squad that appears worryingly short of numbers ahead of the new campaign. With Rose going public with his fears, a stance that will surely be shared by many of his teammates, the club’s transfer policy is firmly under the microscope. It is questionable whether the signing of defender Sanchez would cut the mustard. Proven stars are needed, as well as potential ones. The likes of Ross Barkley would be able to hit the ground running and make a fairly immediate impact in Pochettino’s side. It could be some time before Sanchez can do the same.
