Solskjaer has broken promise to Lingard as Man United talks collapse – pundit

Noel Whelan has suggested broken promises may be behind the collapse in contract talks between Man United and Jesse Lingard.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Leeds striker admitted it “beggars belief” the 28-year-old has not been given more game time since returning to Old Trafford this summer.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider that talks with Lingard over a new contract have collapsed and the player has no intention to restart negotiations.

Man United

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has handed the attacking midfielder just one start among eight appearances this term.

As revealed by Football Insider (19th November), Lingard is among five stars who can leave Old Trafford in January.

Asked if he thought promises over game time and opportunities may have been broken, Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “Yeah.

“I think when he did so well last season for West Ham, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had to give him an opportunity,”

“A player that went in and made such an explosive start with West Ham, you then wonder to yourself.

“He’s under pressure anyway, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. He had to keep him at Man United and give him the opportunity. It has not worked out again, very much like Van de Beek.

“They’re players that are not getting the game time and opportunity at Old Trafford.

“You see the results that Man United have had, the performances they’ve had. It beggars belief these sort of players, with that sort of calibre, have not been given the opportunity.

“I think it is right that he doesn’t sign another contract. He needs to move on, whether they get a new manager or not.

West Ham

“His best chance to get back on track and play regularly is at another club in the Premier League.

“He’ll definitely get that. There will be a massive queue for Jesse Lingard with his service and the quality he brings to a side.”
