Sources: Arsenal star Ainsley Maitland-Niles undergoing Southampton medical
Arsenal star Ainsley Maitland-Niles is undergoing a medical at Southampton, sources have told Football Insider.
The two clubs have agreed a deal and the midfielder, 25, is on the south coast putting the finishing touches to the deal.
It has been widely reported that he has agreed a 12-month extension to his Arsenal contract before heading out to Southampton on a loan-to-buy deal.
His current contract is set to expire at the end of the season and the Gunners do not want to lose him for free next summer.
Maitland-Niles has not featured for Mikel Arteta’s side since November 2021 and has not been in a matchday squad this term.
He spent the second half of last season on loan at Jose Mourinho’s Roma but only played 12 times and failed to nail down a regular starting spot.
Southampton have been busy in the final days of the transfer window as Ralph Hasenhuttl looks to bolster his squad.
Football Insider reported on Wednesday (31 August) that they have agreed a £10million deal with Man City for winger Samuel Edozie.
Sources told this site on Thursday (1 September) they are also in advanced talks to sign Marseille defender Duje Caleta-Car on a permanent deal.
Maitland-Niles will offer vast Premier League experience, amassing 87 appearances in the competition in his time at Arsenal and on loan at West Brom.
He also has five England caps to his name after impressing for the Gunners towards the end of the 2019-20 season as they won the FA Cup.
