Sources: Aston Villa star Diego Carlos out for season in shattering blow

Aston Villa star Diego Carlos is expected to be out for the rest of the season after rupturing his Achilles tendon, sources have told Football Insider.

The Premier League club announced on Monday (15 August) the defender will undergo surgery on the injury sustained in Saturday’s (13 August) win over Everton.

Villa staff privately do not expect to see Carlos in action again this season in what is a devastating blow for the player and club.

An MRI scan revealed Carlos ruptured his Achilles tendon in stoppage time of Saturday’s clash and he will now begin an extensive rehabilitation programme.

Carlos’s injury is expected to lead Villa to recruit another defender before the close of the transfer window.

Tyrone Mings, Ezri Konsa and Calum Chambers are the only fit centre-backs going into Villa’s trip to Crystal Palace on Saturday (20 August), with Kortney Hause only recently returning from a long-term knee injury.

Mings lined up alongside Carlos for the win over Everton after being left out of the starting XI for the 2-0 loss to Bournemouth on the opening day (6 August).

John McGinn replaced the defender as captain this summer and questions were asked about his long-term future at Villa Park after the defeat to Bournemouth.

Carlos moved to the Midlands giants this summer for £26million from Sevilla and looked set to be one of Steven Gerrard’s first-choice centre-backs.
