Sources: Brentford open talks with Cox over new deal

Brentford are opening talks with rising star Matthew Cox over a new contract, sources have told Football Insider.

The goalkeeper, 19, was a stand-out performer for England at the recent European Under-19 Championship in Slovakia and was named in the team of the tournament.

Cox is regarded as a future number one at Brentford and the club are keen to sort out his long-term future to ward off any interest from other clubs.

The Premier League outfit are aware of the growing interest in the highly regarded shot-stopper.

Cox, who signed for the Bees last summer (2021) is currently set to become a free agent in June 2024.

The former AFC Wimbledon starlet was a regular fixture on the bench for Thomas Frank’s side during the 2021-22 season after an injury to first-choice shot-stopper David Raya.

Football Insider revealed late last year (2021) that the goalkeeper had been selected to make his debut against Manchester United before the game was postponed due to a Covid outbreak.

A Brentford source told this site that Frank and his coaching staff had been impressed with the speed of Cox’s development since joining the club in the summer window.

The former Chelsea youth could now become second choice at the Brentford Community Stadium after Alvaro Fernandez returned to parent club Huesca following a season-long loan in England.

Cox started four of five games – including the final – as England’s Under-19 side lifted the European Championships earlier this month.

Brentford, who finished 13th in their maiden Premier League season in 2021-22, are yet to make a summer signing.
