Sources: Brighton to open Joel Veltman talks

There is a “very good chance” of Joel Veltman extending his stay with Brighton past the summer window, sources have told Football Insider.

The 31-year-old right-back has been a key man for the Seagulls this season but his contract is set to expire in June.

It is believed that Brighton hold an option to extend his deal a further 12 months – and the south coast club are keen to activate it.

Several clubs are monitoring Veltman’s situation as they hope to land him on a free transfer in the summer window.

But sources with knowledge of the situation have revealed that the Netherlands international is happy with life at Brighton.

It is also believed that the Seagulls will hold talks with Veltman about a longer-term agreement as they are desperate to keep him at the Amex Stadium.

According to FBRef, the former Ajax ace earns £40,000-a-week on his current deal.

Veltman has gone public to talk about his situation in recent days, insisting he is “curious” about his options as he hinted at a big final contract with his career entering its twilight years.

The right-back has turned out 31 times across all competitions for Brighton this season, notching one goal and one assist.

He has been a versatile option for the Seagulls, also turning out at centre-back.

Veltman has proved to be just another bargain signing for the European challengers after signing for just £900,000 in 2020.
