Sources: Celtic work on signing new goalkeeper amid Kasper Schmeichel concerns
Celtic are working behind the scenes to identify goalkeeper targets as they eye long-term replacements for the ageing Kasper Schmeichel.
The 39-year-old will see his contract expire at the end of the season, and the Hoops have already begun the process of landing a new shot-stopper.
As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the goalkeeper’s age is a concern for Celtic amid a growing feeling that he is heading towards the end of his career following a downturn in his performances.
This comes after Football Insider revealed in October that Celtic are considering signing a goalkeeper amid uncertainty about the current number one.
Alongside their long-term preparations, there have been immediate concerns about Schmeichel‘s performances, leading to their search for a replacement.
Celtic eye new goalkeeper amid Kasper Schmeichel concern
Chris Sutton recently slammed Schmeichel for his recent displays, while fans have begun to grow frustrated by his inconsistent performances between the sticks.
In 22 appearances so far this season, the goalkeeper has kept 11 clean sheets, which is an impressive record despite the criticism of his performances.
Celtic’s efforts to land a new goalkeeper have now ramped up, with the expectation that the Dane will leave at the end of the season, with multiple options on their radar.
Speaking on the Inside Track podcast, I explained: “I think obviously it is an area of the team that the Celtic recruitment personnel are looking to strengthen, the goalkeeping options.
“Kasper Schmeichel is out of contract in the summer and again, he’s not getting any younger.
“He’s had such an illustrious career, but Celtic are now looking to bring in a new number one.”
Celtic make new plan to back Wilfried Nancy in January
Football Insider revealed last month that Celtic will have to back Wilfried Nancy in January as he aims to win the Premiership title ahead of early-season leaders Hearts.

As the boss prepares to start life at Parkhead, the Frenchman’s arrival could see Celtic raid the MLS for talent, due to his extensive knowledge of the league.
A number of his previous Columbus Crew players have been tipped to follow Nancy to Scotland, and could be available in the January window when the MLS season ends.
Football Insider revealed on 2 December that Celtic are interested in signing Wessam Abou Ali, but could find it difficult to pull off the deal.
Columbus Crew are extremely reluctant to part ways with the Palestine international, who arrived in the summer and has hit the ground running in the MLS.
