Sources: Chelsea accelerate on last-gasp striker signing after deal agreed

Chelsea are working on signing a striker before Friday night’s (1 September) transfer cut-off, sources have told Football Insider.

The Blues are in the market for a forward to replace the departed Romelu Lukaku.

Chelsea have wrapped up a season-long loan deal with Roma for Lukaku, with the Serie A side paying £8million to take the striker for a year.

The completion of the Belgium international’s exit has paved the way for the Londoners to complete yet another signing in what has been another remarkable window of activity.

It is believed that Chelsea want another forward and are hopeful of getting a deal over the line by the 11pm deadline on Friday.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side have made no fewer than 10 signings so far this summer.

Forward Nicolas Jackson has arrived on a permanent basis from Villarreal and opened his account for Chelsea in the 3-0 win over Luton last week.

Christopher Nkunku, who primarily plays as a second striker, has also joined the Blues from RB Leipzig but picked up a serious injury before playing his first competitive game for the club.

Armando Broja is also waiting in the wings for his opportunity with Pochettino eager to give him game-time following his cruciate ligament injury layoff.

Chelsea

Chelsea’s top scorer in the 2022-23 campaign was the departed Kai Havertz – who managed just nine strikes in 47 games across all competitions.

Diego Costa was the last Blues player to manage 20 league goals in one campaign – achieving the feat in the 2014-15 season.
