Sources: Crystal Palace fear Newcastle United could now hijack Adam Wharton deal

Crystal Palace are desperate to sign Blackburn Rovers midfielder Adam Wharton this month as they fear Premier League clubs like Newcastle United could move for him in the summer, sources have told Football Insider.

Football Insider revealed on Friday (26 January) that Palace are not giving up on a deal for Wharton, 19, and will return with another bid after seeing a £18.5million offer rejected.

Roy Hodgson’s side are currently leading the race for the youngster’s signature and are the only Premier League side to have firmed up their interest.

But a well-placed source has told Football Insider that Palace want to wrap up a deal “as soon as possible” to ward off strong interest from other clubs.

Tottenham are keen on the Blackburn star and have watched him in action regularly – but it is believed that they are looking elsewhere for midfield reinforcements this month.

Meanwhile, Newcastle and Wolves are also monitoring Wharton’s situation ahead of a potential swoop later this year.

Palace are aware of the growing buzz around the teenager’s performances and are trying to steal a march on their Premier League rivals by striking a mid-season deal with Blackburn.

One potential stumbling block could be the Rovers’ want for a loan-back arrangement, with Football Insider revealing on Saturday (27 January) that Palace are unlikely to sanction such a move as they have an immediate need for Wharton.

The midfield star, who signed a fresh five-year contract at Ewood Park just last month, has made 29 appearances across all competitions this term – notching two goals and three assists.

In other news, Newcastle have already agreed big-money summer signing – it will have major FFP impact.
