Sources: Darren Moore to accept West Brom call as interim appointment lined up

Darren Moore would find it extremely difficult to turn down a possible return as West Brom manager, sources have told Football Insider.

The 51-year-old has emerged as one of the leading candidates to step into the home dugout at The Hawthorns, and it is understood that he would jump at the chance to return if he got the call from the club.

Moore has been out of work since he was sacked by League One side Port Vale at the end of December, and sources have indicated that he is being viewed as an option to provide experience alongside current caretaker boss James Morrison.

The Baggies have got their eyes fixed on making an interim appointment to try and save their season, with their options limited in terms of a long-term candidate at this stage of the campaign.

Moore previously spent a year as West Brom’s boss between 2018 and 2019, and also made over 100 appearances for the club during his playing career.

Darren Moore’s managerial career since leaving West Brom

Moore first took the reins of the senior team at The Hawthorns after Alan Pardew was sacked in April 2018 with the club bottom of the Premier League.

The caretaker boss collected 11 points from his six games in charge, and although the Baggies were still relegated at the end of the season, his record was seen as sufficient for him to get the job on a full-time basis.

He then had West Brom within touching distance of an immediate return to the top flight in the following season, when he was sacked in surprise fashion with the team fourth in the Championship.

Since then, his managerial career has taken plenty of positive and negative turns, as promotions with Sheffield Wednesday and most recently Port Vale have been countered by a relegation with the Owls and a dismissal within six months of being appointed at Huddersfield.

He was axed by Vale with the Midlands outfit sitting rock bottom of the League One table, and has since been unable to find another job.

Nevertheless, his connection with West Brom and understanding of the club could be about to see him trusted with the ultimate responsibility of trying to keep them in the Championship.

Moore battling Tony Mowbray for Hawthorns return

Football Insider revealed last weekend that West Brom are considering appointing Tony Mowbray again on a deal until the end of the season, with an interim option their preferred choice.

They have held preliminary talks over the idea of naming the 62-year-old as manager until the end of the season, and he could potentially return for a third spell in charge.

Mowbray most recently held the hot seat at West Brom at the back end of last season, before he was relieved of his duties to ultimately make way for Ryan Mason.

Since then, the Baggies’ board have got their two appointments badly wrong, and they are now at the stage where it could be a battle between two of their former employees for the position.
