Sources: Dwight Gayle passes Stoke City medical as terms agreed

Dwight Gayle has passed a Stoke City medical and his move from Newcastle United will be announced in the next 24 hours, sources have told Football Insider.

The striker, 32, has agreed a two-year deal with the Championship club and is now set to put pen to paper.

Newcastle have given the green light to Gayle’s exit after demoting him to train with the Under-23s.

He only signed a new three-year deal at St. James’ Park last summer (2021) but fell out of favour under Eddie Howe.

Football Insider revealed earlier this week (19 July) that Stoke were one of five clubs interested in signing the prolific striker.

The Potters have beaten the likes of Championship rivals Birmingham City, Huddersfield Town, Preston North End, Reading and Millwall to his signature.

This site reported earlier this month (11 July) that Middlesbrough had cooled their interest in Gayle as Steve Gibson does not want to sign players over the age of 30.

Gayle had fallen down the pecking order at Newcastle United and last started a Premier League in April 2021.

He only played 14 minutes of top-flight football under Howe who bolstered his forward line with the signing of Chris Wood in January.

Despite his recent lack of game time, Gayle‘s prolific record in the Championship meant plenty of clubs were interested in his signature.

The Englishman has scored 59 times in 100 games in the second-tier across his time at Newcastle, West Brom and Peterborough United.

In other news, Leeds United have responded to Newcastle United’s formal Jack Harrison bid.
