Sources: Ex-Premier League manager on Man City’s list to replace Pep Guardiola
Pep Guardiola’s long-term future at Man City has been cast into doubt in recent days despite what has been an impressive season so far.
Guardiola’s side beat Liverpool 3-0 last time out, firing them up to second in the league table and just four points behind Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal.
However, reports have claimed the 54-year-old could be preparing to leave the Etihad at the end of his contract in 2027, forcing Man City to consider their options.
As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Marseille boss Roberto De Zerbi is one of a number of names being considered by the club’s hierarchy as they put succession plans in place for the manager’s departure.
Since taking over at Marseille after his dismissal from Brighton in 2024, the Italian has turned his side into one capable of challenging Paris Saint-Germain in Ligue 1.

Man City set sights on Roberto De Zerbi
Tottenham considered hiring De Zerbi after parting ways with Ange Postecoglou during the summer, but he remained at Marseille, and is now being considered by City.
Despite being reluctant to see Guardiola leave the Etihad any time soon, they are being forced to consider alternative options including the former Brighton boss.
Speaking on the Inside Track podcast, I explained: “I’m sure a top club like Manchester City, they all prepare for all eventualities.
“They will have a continuously plan in place to ensure there’s a sort of smooth transition in the future. If Pep Guardiola was to leave, look, he’s not an easy person to replace.
“Roberto De Zerbi is a good manager. Top young manager, got a good style of football as well which would be appealing to the Manchester City hierarchy.
“I’m sure City don’t want to even consider losing such a key figure as Guardiola right now.

“There’ll be a long list that Manchester City will be drawing up to replace Guardiola eventually and De Zerbi I’m sure will be one of those names on it.
“And as I said, a lot of thinking we’ll go into because it’s a key decision that City will really need to get right.”
Man City make immediate Pep Guardiola decision
After struggling during the first few games of the season, former Man United scout Mick Brown told Football Insider in September that questions are already being asked at Man City.
Speculation had emerged again about Guardiola’s future, following suggestions during last season’s dismal spell that he could even walk away from the Etihad.
Football Insider revealed on that City planned to stick by Guardiola and had no immediate concerns despite being aware of the criticisms.

Meanwhile, Football Insider revealed that Guardiola is comfortable in his position at Man City and there are no immediate concerns about his future.
Succession plans are being put in place for when the boss eventually leaves, but it is not currently part of the thinking for City’s immediate future.
