Sources: Former Man United star Chris Smalling agrees Roma deal

Chris Smalling has agreed a new deal to extend his stay at Roma, sources have told Football Insider.

The 33-year-old’s current contract was set to expire this summer, but the Italian club have finally agreed terms with the defender over a new deal.

Smalling is set to sign a new two-year deal in the Italian capital, extending his stay at the club until the summer of 2025.

It is understood that new terms have been agreed between all parties and an announcement of the deal is imminent.

Smalling has established himself as a key player for Roma since making an £18million switch to Italy from Man United in 2020.

In his three years at the club, he has made 138 appearances across all competitions, scoring 10 goals and providing four assists in the process.

He reunited with Jose Mourinho in Rome when he was appointed manager in 2021, and the ex-United duo enjoyed success together just a year later when they lifted the Europa Conference League with a 1-0 win over Feyenoord in the final.

Despite entering the twilight years of his career, Smalling has remained a key part of Mourinho’s team this season, making 39 starts across all competitions, including 28 in Serie A.

Roma currently find themselves battling for European qualification in the final four games of the Serie A season with the club six points off the top four in seventh position.
