Huddersfield Town and Preston North End are in the hunt to sign Luton Town defender Matty Pearson, Football Insider can reveal.

The centre-back, 27, has been offered a new contract by Luton ahead of his deal expiring next month.

But a source has told Football Insider Huddersfield and Preston have been handed a major boost as he is set to reject the extension and move on a free transfer in the upcoming window.

It comes as a blow to Luton Town who are set to lose Pearson's centre-back partner Sonny Bradley.

Both Pearson and Bradley moved to Kenilworth Road in 2018 and played a key role as they won the League One title in their first season.

Pearson has played 136 times for Luton, including 40 Championship appearances this season as they finished 12th.

Preston finished one place and one point behind them and are in the market for a new centre-back.

Academy graduate Ben Davies left the club for Liverpool in February and was replaced by on-loan man Liam Lindsay.

He has now returned to parent club Stoke City meaning the Lilywhites have just three senior centre-backs on their books.

Huddersfield Town finished in 20th, six points above the relegation zone.

They released experienced defenders Christopher Schindler, Tommy Elphick and Richard Stearman last week.
