Sources: Julian Alvarez ‘very happy’ at Man City and set to reject Real Madrid offer

Man City expect to agree a new contract with Julian Alvarez despite interest from La Liga giants Barcelona and Real Madrid, sources have told Football Insider.

This site revealed on Monday (27 February) that talks are set to get underway over a lucrative new contract for the 23-year-old.

It is believed that there are not likely to be any obstacles which would prevent an agreement – even amid interest from El Clasico giants in Spain.

Real Madrid and Barcelona wanted to take advantage of Alvarez’s backup status at Man City to lure him away from the Premier League.

But sources with knowledge of his situation have revealed that he is “very happy” at the Etihad Stadium.

In turn, the reigning Premier League champions are thrilled with Alvarez’s progress and see him as a key part of their ambition to win more titles in the coming years.

Alvarez still has more than four years left to run on his current deal at the Etihad Stadium but has been earmarked for improved terms regardless.

According to FBref, the striker earns £50,000-a-week on his current deal.

He has started just six of a possible 25 league games this season, scoring five goals – including a first-half strike in the 4-1 win over Bournemouth on Saturday (25 February).

The 23-year-old scored four goals for Argentina as they lifted the World Cup in Qatar – including a brace in the semi-final against Croatia.

Man City paid a reported fee of £14.1million to bring the striker to the club in January 2022 – although he didn’t join up with his new teammates until the summer window.

First-choice striker Erling Haaland is looking set to break the Premier League goalscoring record this season.

He has 27 goals in 24 league outings, while the 38-game record is currently held by Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah after his 32-goal haul in the 2017-18 campaign.
