Swansea City have fended off a late Blackpool hijack to agree the signing of Man United right-back Ethan Laird, Football Insider understands.

Blackpool made a late move to scupper the deal of their Championship rivals.

But a recruitment source has told Football Insider that Laird is now putting the finishing touches to joining Swansea.

They have reached a full agreement with United and the rising star has already passed a medical with the Welsh outfit.

The deal will see Laird be reunited with new Swansea manager Russell Martin, who had him on loan at MK Dons last season.

Laird, who can play in both full-back positions, provided four assists in 25 games for the League One side after moving on loan from United in January.

The 20-year-old is highly-rated at Old Trafford and has already played twice for Ole-Gunnar Solskjaer's first team.

Both appearances, including one start, came in the Europa League group stages last season.

After gaining experience in League One, Manchester United want the youngster to get regular Championship experience.

Martin will be hoping to take the Swans one step further than Steve Cooper did.

They reached the Championship play-off final last term but were beaten by Brentford and have lost a number of key players since, including goalkeeper Freddie Woodman and defender Marc Guehi.

City begin their league campaign with a 2-1 league defeat to Blackburn Rovers followed by last weekend's goalless draw against Sheffield United.
