Sources: Leeds in advanced talks over Joe Gelhardt deal

Leeds United are in advanced talks with Joe Gelhardt over a new deal, sources have told Football Insider.

The forward, 20, is set for a big pay rise as well as an extension to the deal he signed when joining from Wigan Athletic in the summer of 2020.

Leeds have huge hopes for Gelhardt, who made such an impression after breaking into the first team last season.

He was signed for just £1million in August 2020, as Leeds took advantage of a cash-strapped Wigan being relegated to League One.

Gelhardt’s current contract has two more years to run.

However, the club are keen to tie him down and reward him for his rise through the ranks.

He made his first-team debut in the League Cup win over Fulham in September 2021.

The Liverpool-born forward has gone on to establish himself as a regular among the senior squad.

His Premier League debut came in October 2020, while he made his first start a month later.

He has been included in all but three matchday squads in the league since his first top-flight appearance.

Gelhardt played a key role in the club’s survival battle last season, featuring in all but two of the club’s last 12 games.

He netted a last-minute winner against Norwich City and contributed the assist for Pascal Struijk’s dramatic equaliser against Brighton.

The versatile forward has enjoyed a bright start to Leeds’ pre-season schedule, scoring against Brisbane Roar on Thursday (14 July).

He has a total of 22 appearances, two goals and four assists under his belt for Leeds so far.
