Sources: Leeds United expected to let Adam Forshaw go

Leeds United are expected to let Adam Forshaw go in the summer after another injury-plagued campaign, sources have told Football Insider.

The central midfielder, 31, secured a new 12-month contract against the odds this time last year shortly before his old deal was due to expire.

But Leeds sources are not expecting a repeat this year with Forshaw out of contract in June and fighting to save his career.

United have the option to extend that deal by a further 12 months, but there is little chance of that with Forshaw sidelined with a hip injury that has troubled him for years.

He has had just 157 minutes of Premier League action this season and has not been seen on the pitch since breaking down in the goalless draw against Newcastle United on New Year’s Eve.

Forshaw has been sidelined for the last two-and-a-half months but was a fringe figure even before his latest injury, with Tyler Adams, and Marc Roca the key central midfielders before Leeds increased the competition further with the late-January capture of Weston McKennie.

The former Middlesbrough star, a favourite of ex-manager Marcelo Bielsa, has been plagued by injuries during his time at Elland Road.

He was awarded a contract extension in January of last year after overcoming a devastating spell of injuries with a sustained run in the side and some fine displays.

But Forshaw has made just 84 Leeds appearances in five-and-a-half years since joining from Middlesbrough in January 2018.
