Sources: Leeds United make official approach to Everton over Ben Godfrey deal

Leeds United have made an official approach to Everton over a late-window loan deal for defender Ben Godfrey, sources have told Football Insider.

Football Insider revealed earlier this week (24 January) that the Whites were in preliminary talks over a potential loan swoop for the 26-year-old.

Leeds turned their attention to landing Godfrey after his move to Serie A side Atalanta collapsed earlier this month due to Italy’s tax break abolishment.

Everton boss Sean Dyche has given the green light for the centre-back to leave Goodison Park this month as the club look to reduce their wage bill.

Meanwhile, Daniel Farke’s Leeds side are keen to add quality as they push for promotion back to the Premier League.

Godfrey has struggled for minutes in the 2023-24 campaign with Dyche finding a settled rearguard this term.

He has played just three times totalling 180 minutes of action in the current season.

The two-cap England international, who is under contract at Everton until June 2025, has made 99 Premier League appearances across spells with Norwich and the Toffees.

Godfrey can play across the backline and in defensive midfield and thus could prove a versatile option during his loan at Elland Road.

Leeds, who are yet to make a signing this month, sit fourth in the Championship after 29 games.

Everton are 17th in the Premier League table and sit just one point above the relegation zone after their 10-point deduction earlier this season.
