Sources: Leicester City leading race to sign James Garner from Man United

Leicester City are leading the race for Man United midfielder James Garner, sources have told Football Insider.

United are open to letting Garner, 21, leave Old Trafford before the close of the transfer window as he does not figure in Erik ten Hag’s long-term plans.

Leicester, Everton and Southampton have all made approaches for Garner, but the Foxes are now armed with transfer funds from the sale of Wesley Fofana.

They are now ready to push ahead with a move for the England Under-21 international before Thursday’s (1 September) transfer deadline.

Sky Sports reported on Saturday (27 August) that Fofana is set to join Chelsea in a deal worth £70million plus add-ons.

Leicester are the only club in the Premier League not to sign an outfield player this summer and have struggled so far this season.

Garner impressed on loan at Nottingham Forest last term and was a key part of the side that won promotion to the Premier League.

However, he struggled with injury during pre-season at Man United and has not been able to force his way into Ten Hag’s plans.

He has two years left on his contract at Old Trafford but has not featured in the matchday squad for their last two games.

Ten Hag has bolstered his midfield ranks with the signing of Casemiro from Real Madrid and he made his debut in the 1-0 win over Southampton on Saturday (27 August).

Garner looks set to end his United career with seven senior appearances, including two in the Premier League.

In other news, Kieran Maguire has claimed Man United are ready to strike a £200million deal as a Glazer funding plan emerges.
