Sources: Liverpool set sights on Serie A powerhouse who’s perfect for Arne Slot’s system

Liverpool have set their sights on a deal to sign Atalanta midfielder Ederson as they aim to bolster their midfield in the January transfer window.

Atalanta are reluctant to let the midfielder leave, but are bracing for offers in 2026 as a result of his contract situation, with just two years remaining on his deal.

As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 26-year-old is seen as the ideal option for Arne Slot‘s midfield as he aims to bring in a more physical and athletic midfielder than those currently at his disposal.

The Brazil star has long been linked with a move to the Premier League, as Football Insider revealed last year that Man City could sign Ederson for a “big” fee.

Liverpool have now become the latest side to show a strong interest in his availability, and could test the waters as a result of their difficult season so far.

Liverpool set sights on Atalanta star in January

Liverpool are aiming to bolster in the middle of the park when the January window opens amid ongoing concerns about a lack of depth behind their first-choice midfielders.

The Reds have been linked with moves for the likes of Adam Wharton, Elliot Anderson and Carlos Baleba in recent months as they consider a number of options.

However, Ederson has emerged as the ideal profile Liverpool are aiming to add to their midfield, while he is also seen as a good fit for Premier League football.

Speaking on the Inside Track podcast, I explained: “Yeah, he’s been linked with the Premier League for a number of years now.

“He’s a top player, Ederson, there’s no getting away from that. He’s really impressed at Atalanta in Serie A, and in the Champions League and Europa League as well.

“So he has got the ability, I think, to go to the Premier League and be a success. He’s a physical, athletic midfielder, also good in possession as well.

“So I think he would tick a lot of boxes for Liverpool right now.

“It does look like Liverpool are in need of a bit of physicality and energy in that midfield and in the team in general so I’m sure he’s somebody who’s maybe on their list.

“But as you said there’s other clubs who are looking at him.”

Newcastle plan to rival Liverpool for Ederson

Despite Liverpool’s growing interest in the Atalanta midfielder, they are not the only Premier League club keeping tabs on his situation ahead of the January window.

Football Insider revealed on 11 November that Newcastle are plotting a move to sign Ederson as they aim to strengthen Eddie Howe’s midfield options.

Newcastle have been linked with moves for a number of midfielders including Elliot Anderson and Kobbie Mainoo, but have now set their sights on a new target.

A new midfielder has been on the Magpies radar as they aim to bolster their midfield, leading to further speculation about Joelinton’s future.

Football Insider revealed on 10 November that Newcastle could replace Joelinton in January and are assessing their options ahead of the window.
