Sources: Longstaff set for medical after Newcastle accept offer

Aberdeen have agreed to sign Matty Longstaff on loan from Newcastle United, Football Insider has learned.

The Premier League club have given the green light to the homegrown star, 21, heading to the Scottish Premiership outfit.

A Newcastle source has told Football Insider that the club have accepted a loan offer and Longstaff is set to head to the Dons for a medical and to complete the move.

The Scottish club will pay a fee to take Longstaff for the campaign and the transfer should be finalised by the end of the weekend.

The homegrown midfielder has fallen down the pecking order at St James’ Park under Steve Bruce.

As quoted by the Northern Echo (24th August), the Newcastle boss confirmed he planned to send the youngster on loan.

It is understood Aberdeen have now won the race to sign Longstaff.

The younger brother of Newcastle midfielder Sean Longstaff, Matty made his first-team debut back in October 2019.

He scored the only goal of the game to help Newcastle seal victory over Manchester United.

The fan favourite has gone on to make 20 appearances across all competitions for the Magpies.

However, he struggled to impose himself on the first team last season and played just five times in the league.

Bruce has not included the younger Longstaff brother in any of Newcastle’s Premier League squads so far this term.

He was also left as an unused substitute for the League Cup defeat to Burnley.

Longstaff is set to join an Aberdeen side sitting second in the Premiership table.

However, the Dons’ European campaign was ended on Thursday night after defeat to Qarabag in their Europa Conference League qualifier.
