Sources: Longstaff to tell Newcastle he wants to quit after Bruce broken promises

Matty Longstaff will tell Newcastle United chiefs he wants to leave this summer, Football Insider understands.

Longstaff, 21, only made five Premier League appearances last season despite being given assurances over his game time by Steve Bruce.

A Newcastle source has told Football Insider that Longstaff is frustrated at how he has been used by the club this season.

However, this site understands Longstaff won’t hand in an official transfer request.

Instead he will ask United to move aside and let him go if an acceptable offer comes in this summer.

The midfielder turned down transfer offers last summer and signed a new two-year deal as his previous contract expired.

Longstaff was told he would receive more game time in the last weeks of the just-completed season but this didn’t happen.

The midfielder featured on the bench during the campaign’s final weeks but was never brought on by Bruce.

In February, Football Insider revealed several senior players were baffled by Newcastle’s decision to block a loan move for Longstaff in January.

There were also concerns about Sean Longstaff’s drastic decrease in game time.

However, the elder Longstaff was given more chances in the second half of the campaign.

It is understood this has also contributed to Matty’s irritation after being constantly overlooked for selection by Bruce.

He will now look to leave the club after several broken promises from his manager.

Longstaff had a breakthrough 2019-20 campaign as he made 16 first team appearances in all competitions.

The boyhood Newcastle fan had a debut to remember as he scored a long-range effort against Manchester United.

In other news, Bruce is plotting a “bargain” signing from Leeds with his meagre Newcastle United kitty.
