Sources: Major update on Morelos future at Rangers and truth about Newcastle interest revealed

Newcastle are not planning a move for Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos in this month’s transfer window, Football Insider understands.

The Premier League strugglers are in the market for striking reinforcements this month after losing star forward Callum Wilson to injury.

Morelos has been reported as a target by American outlet CBS Sports.

However, a recruitment source has told Football Insider that Newcastle boss Eddie Howe is not currently pursuing a move for Morelos.

He is looking elsewhere to try and bring in a new forward before the transfer window closes.

Moreover, Rangers do not need to cash in on Morelos after selling Nathan Paterson to Everton for £12m rising to £16million this week.

It is believed the Glasgow giants will only be willing to do business if they receive a top-bracket offer.

Morelos has been a standout performer since Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s arrival as manager.

The Colombian has scored six goals in eight appearances under the Dutch boss.

As such, Rangers are reluctant to let him go as they push for a second-successive Premiership title.

Meanwhile, Newcastle are hoping to bolster their forward line in a bid to avoid relegation from the Premier League.

Their hopes of survival took a big blow when Wilson limped off injured against Manchester United (27 December).

Football Insider injury expert Ben Dinnery suggested the striker may be sidelined until April in the worst-case scenario for Newcastle.

As such, Newcastle have turned their attention to signing a new striker before the end of the month.

As revealed by Football Insider today (5 January), the Magpies are set to kick off their spending with the capture of Kieran Trippier.

In other news, a second Rangers player has agreed a move to an English club after Nathan Patterson.
