Sources: Major update on ‘significant sales’ at Nottingham Forest after FFP bombshell
Nottingham Forest manager Nuno Espirito Santo is keen to trim his squad this month in the wake of their bombshell Premier League charge, sources have told Football Insider.
Forest confirmed to the Premier League on Monday (15 January) that they are in breach of the top-flight’s Profitability and Sustainability rules and could therefore face a fine or potential point deduction.
Espirito Santo succeeded Steve Cooper at the City Ground last month and is understood to want to bring his own signings to the club in January despite events in recent days.
But Forest have an unbalanced, top-heavy squad after irresponsible spending in recent windows and the Portuguese will have to make sales before bringing signings in.
A well-placed source has told Football Insider that Espirito Santo will only be able to bring in his own players if Forest make “major sales” in the remainder of this month’s transfer window.
Forest’s squad has bloated up to 35 players after the return of some loanees this month and it is believed there will be far more exits than incomings this month.
However, the African Cup of Nations could pose a problem to transfer chiefs at the City Ground.
Espirito Santo has six key first-teamers away at the tournament and any sales could weaken Forest until those players return to England.
Forest sit 15th in the Premier League table after winning five of their 20 games in the 2023-24 campaign.

The Midlands giants brought no fewer than 30 new players to the club in the 2022-23 season following their promotion from the Championship.
They have been charged along with Everton with breaking the Premier League’s spending rules – which permitted a loss of no more than £61million for Forest in a three-season period.
