Sources: Major update on Wyke quitting Sunderland

Sunderland expect Charlie Wyke to quit on a free transfer this summer, Football Insider understands.

The Black Cats are in talks to tie the striker down to a new contract before his current terms expire at the end of next month.

However, a Sunderland source has told Football Insider no agreement is in place and there is a growing expectation among club chiefs Wyke will leave.

His contract situation means he has been targeted by multiple EFL clubs ahead of the summer transfer window.

As revealed by this site on Thursday, Ipswich are preparing a lucrative contract offer to tempt him away from Wearside.

Wyke was a standout performer for Sunderland this season, with 30 goals in 53 appearances across all competitions.

However, his efforts were not enough to fire the Black Cats to promotion from League One.

He scored in a 2-1 win over Lincoln City in their play-off semi-final but the Imps progressed thanks to a 3-2 victory on aggregate.

Sunderland confirmed on Tuesday they are in negotiations with Wyke over his future at the Stadium of Light.

However, club chiefs are growing pessimistic about striking a deal.

The Middlesbrough-born hitman is set to have an offer on the table from League One rivals Ipswich.

The Tractor Boys, who were recently taken over in a reported £40million deal, are in the market for a proven centre-forward.

It is understood they have identified Wyke as a potentially available option with great pedigree in the division.

Wyke has scored 58 times in 175 League One appearances during spells at Hartlepool, Bradford and Sunderland.

Ipswich were the third-lowest scorers in the third tier during the 2020/21 campaign with 46 goals.
