James Garner has rejected the offer of a new contract from Manchester United to throw his future at the club into major doubt, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.

The midfielder, 20, has long been regarded as a future star capable of establishing himself as a first-team regular.

But a United source has told Football Insider that Garner has knocked back a new deal that would replace his agreement expiring next year.

Manchester United

Garner had been set to go out on loan this month amid interest from Nottingham Forest, Stoke City and Sheffield United.

The up-and-coming midfielder signed his latest terms as an 18-year-old back in 2019.

The Red Devils do hold the option of a one-year extension but are keen to tie the youngster down to a long-term deal.

However, Garner's latest snub has thrown his future at Old Trafford into the air.

United are keen for him to head back out on loan this summer after spells at Watford and Forest last term.

He played 21 times for the Hornets before moving to the City Ground in January.

Garner made a further 20 appearances and scored four goals for Forest before the end of the season.

His impressive performances have led to the Championship side chasing his capture for the 2021/22 campaign.

However, they have been joined by Stoke and Sheffield United in the hunt for his signing.

Garner has been a regular among United's first team for their pre-season fixtures.

He has played a total of seven times in competitive games since breaking through the youth ranks at Old Trafford.
