Marseille are interested in re-signing Aston Villa star Morgan Sanson this summer, Football Insider understands.

The midfielder, 27, has struggled to make an impact at Villa since signing from the French club in January of last year.

A French source has told Football Insider that Marseille are keeping tabs on Sanson’s situation ahead of the upcoming window.

Villa won’t stand in Sanson’s way if they receive the right offer for a player who has failed to win over Steven Gerrard.

Football Insider revealed earlier this month (2 April) that Sanson has been deemed surplus to requirements and he can leave this summer.

Villa are willing to sell the midfielder at a loss and would accept bids close to the £10million mark.

Sanson has started just three Premier League games this season.

The former France Under-21 international has played just 20 times in total since completing a reported potential £15.5million move to Villa Park in January 2020.

Football Insider revealed just months after Sanson had joined that Villa feared they had made a mistake in signing the midfielder - who was said at that point to be very difficult to manage.

The 27-year-old notched 25 goals and 27 assists in 157 games during his last spell at Marseille.

Questions have been raised over the Midlands giants' lavish spending in recent seasons.

£330million has been spent on incomings since their Premier League return in 2019.

Aston Villa

Aston Villa sit 15th in the Premier League with six games remaining.

Gerrard's side are some 15 points adrift of a European berth.
