Sources: Michael Carrick in advanced talks to be Middlesbrough manager

Middlesbrough are in advanced talks with Man United legend Michael Carrick about the vacant manager’s job, sources have told Football Insider.

The 41-year-old has moved into pole position for the post as he looks for a full-time management role.

Negotiations between Carrick and the north-east club are progressing well and an agreement is close.

Middlesbrough are looking for a new manager after sacking Chris Wilder last week following their poor start to the season.

Carrick has been out of work since leaving Manchester United last December following a three-game spell in caretaker charge after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s departure.

He was also assistant manager to the Norwegian after ending his playing days.

Carrick racked up 481 Premier League appearances and 34 England caps during a trophy-laden career which saw him lift five Premier Leagues and one Champions League trophy.

Wilder left the Riverside Stadium with Middlesbrough sitting 22nd in the Championship – winning just two of their opening 11 games of the season.

Goalkeeper coach Leo Percovich took the reins on an interim basis and lead Boro to a win over Birmingham on 5 October, but couldn’t keep the momentum going – losing 2-0 away at Millwall on Saturday (8 October).
