Sources: Michael Carrick update ahead of Middlesbrough clash tonight

Michael Carrick is expected to be in the stands for the Middlesbrough clash at Wigan Athletic on Wednesday night ahead of his appointment, sources have told Football Insider.

The former Man United player and coach, 41, has been in negotiations with Boro for weeks and is on the verge of taking over.

Talks had stalled last week but Middlesbrough moved to resurrect discussions earlier this week.

Sources told Football Insider on Monday (17 October) that there had been a breakthrough in negotiations and Carrick is now set to take over at the Riverside.

Middlesbrough have been without a manager since sacking Chris Wilder at the beginning of the month (3 October) after they won only two of their opening 11 Championship games.

Leo Percovich has been placed in temporary charge and will be in the dugout for the trip to Wigan but has not been able to oversee a change in fortunes.

They go into Wednesday’s trip to the DW Stadium third from bottom of the table and on the back of consecutive defeats.

Carrick has been out of football since ending his 15-year association with Man United in December 2021.

The former midfielder had a three-game unbeaten spell in temporary charge of the club after Ole Gunnar Solkjaer was sacked and before Ralf Rangnick was appointed.

He was on Solskjaer’s and Jose Mourinho’s coaching staff at Old Trafford and was recently spotted in the away end when United beat Everton 2-1 at Goodison Park earlier this month (9 October).

In other news, there has been a major update on Aston Villa’s swoop for Mauricio Pochettino.
