Sources: Middlesbrough talks with Michael Carrick collapse
Michael Carrick is out of the running to be the new Middlesbrough manager, sources have told Football Insider.
The 41-year-old had moved into pole position for the post and talks with the north-east club had reached an advanced stage.
But Middlesbrough are now set to turn their attention elsewhere after negotiations with Carrick collapsed.
Boro are in the market for a new manager after sacking Chris Wilder last week (3 October) following their poor start to the season.
At the time, Boro sat 22nd in the Championship after only winning two of their 11 league games this season.
They now sit 21st after picking up three points in their first game without a permanent manager, against Birmingham on 5 October.
Carrick has been out of work since leaving Manchester United last December following a three-game spell in caretaker charge after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s departure.
He was also assistant manager to the Norwegian after ending his playing days.
The Wallsend-born former midfielder racked up 481 Premier League appearances and 34 England caps during a trophy-laden career which saw him lift five Premier Leagues and one Champions League trophy.
His search for a first managerial role is set to continue.

Middlesbrough face Blackburn Rovers on Saturday (15 October) before a quick turnaround sees them take on Wigan Athletic next week (19 October).
Rovers sit seventh in the Championship as it stands while Wigan sit ninth.
