Sources: Murphy agrees blockbuster £15m+ Newcastle United deal

Newcastle United have tied Jacob Murphy down to a blockbuster six-year contract that includes a big pay hike, Football Insider has learned.

The north-east giants announced yesterday (Wednesday, July 7th) that the converted wing-back was one of five senior stars to land a new or extended agreement.

Newcastle did not divulge the length of the contracts handed to Murphy, Federico Fernandez or Dwight Gayle.

But a Newcastle source has told Football Insider that Murphy has signed a new and improved deal that runs until 2027 and is worth more than £15million in total.

The former Norwich City man’s previous deal was due to run until the summer of 2022.

This site revealed on June 30th Newcastle were close to agreeing terms with the 26-year-old amid growing interest from suitors.

Rangers, Leeds United and Southampton were among the clubs in pursuit of the former England under-21 international.

However, Newcastle have moved to tie Murphy down to a long-term deal after his resurgence at St James’ Park.

The winger joined the Magpies in 2017 but struggled to impose himself in the starting XI under Rafael Benitez.

He spent time on loan at West Brom and Sheffield Wednesday between January 2019 and July 2020.

Steve Bruce kept Murphy on board for the 2020/21 campaign and used him as a right-sided wing-back.

He ended up playing 31 games across all competitions, including every minute of Newcastle’s final eight Premier League games.

As well as Murphy, Newcastle have handed defender Fernandez and striker Gayle new deals as their old terms expired this summer.

The club have also triggered extension clauses in Paul Dummet’s and Fabian Schar’s contracts.
