Sources: New details emerge on Wood move to Newcastle that are set to enrage Burnley fans
Newcastle United signed Chris Wood from Burnley even though his release clause did not come into effect until the summer window, Football Insider has learned.
The north-east giants pulled off the surprise signing of the striker from the relegation-threatened Clarets last week.
It was widely reported that Newcastle had pulled off the deal after triggering a £25million release clause in Wood’s contract.

But a source with knowledge of Wood’s situation has in fact told Football Insider that although there was a clause in his Burnley deal, it could not be triggered until the summer.
That did not put Newcastle off from pushing for a January deal and they had an offer accepted by the Lancashire club last weekend.
It is believed to have incensed manager Sean Dyche that Wood was sold to a direct relegation rival when a deal could have been avoided.
Burnley fans are likely to be furious that such a key player has been sold with the club’s Premier League fate up in the air.
Dyche’s side are bottom of the division, one point behind 19th-placed Newcastle.
However, the Lancashire club do have matches in hand on Newcastle, 18th-placed Norwich City and Watford in 17th.

Wood made his debut for Newcastle in last Saturday’s 1-1 Premier League draw against Watford, playing the full 90 minutes of the match..
He has signed a two-and-a-half year deal with the north-east giants that runs until the summer of 2024.
In other news, Newcastle United told by finance guru they could lose “£60million overnight” after latest development.
