Sources: Newcastle ready to offload Jamal Lewis as Matt Targett deal finalised

Newcastle are ready to send Jamal Lewis out on loan before the transfer window closes, Football Insider understands.

Toon boss Eddie Howe has given the green light for the 24-year-old to exit ahead of the imminent arrival of Matt Targett from Aston Villa.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider that Lewis could now head out of Newcastle on loan for the rest of the season.

The Magpies signed Lewis in a £15million deal in September 2020 from Norwich City.

However, the left-back has struggled for consistency since arriving to St. James’ Park.

A loan move to the Championship would appear most plausible for the defender, who has three-and-a-half years remaining on his contract.

Lewis has made six appearances for Eddie Howe’s side this season, with four of those Premier League starts.

He has not featured since the 3-1 loss to Liverpool in mid-December in which he suffered a hamstring injury.

Paul Dummett and Javier Manquillo are ahead of Lewis in the left-back pecking order at St. James’ Park.

As revealed by Football Insider this morning (31 January), the Magpies have agreed a deal to sign Targett on loan for the remainder of the season.

Villa boss Steven Gerrard has given the green light for the left-back to leave after signing Lucas Digne from Everton earlier in the window.

Howe has deemed Lewis surplus to requirements as a result.

Targett is expected to join ahead of tonight’s deadline.
