Sources: Newcastle told cut-price Oscar Mingueza bid could be accepted

Newcastle are keen to strengthen at the back by signing Celta Vigo’s Oscar Mingueza.

With the ability to play in both midfield and defence, the versatility of the Spaniard has attracted Premier League attention before.

Sources told Football Insider back in January that Aston Villa were eager to sign Mingueza to solidify their defence and offer an alternative option in midfield.

Ultimately, a deal never materialised but, with the 26-year-old out of contract at the end of the season, Celta Vigo are now contemplating cashing in before it’s too late.

Mingueza set to attract multiple clubs as Newcastle aim to take advantage of Celta Vigo’s tricky situation

As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the Magpies are intrigued by the prospect of signing the number three.

Moreover, with Emil Krafth set to leave Newcastle at the end of the season, Eddie Howe will want to fill an inevitable void at right-back by bringing in the Barcelona academy graduate.

Speaking on the Inside Track podcast over the Toon’s interest in the Spain international, I explained: “I think he’s a player that a lot of clubs would be looking at, especially with his situation [being] out of contract next summer.

“So, they [Newcastle] could land a talented player on a free transfer or even potentially try and sign him for a cut-price deal in January if Celta Vigo do decide that could be their last chance to cash in.

“On Mingueza, the key thing for Mingueza is his versatility. He’s capable of playing at centre-back, full-back and also in midfield as well. So that’s what makes him such an attractive proposition.”

Mingueza transfer depends on Eddie Howe’s managerial status

The Celta Vigo man may reject the Magpies’ advances if he feels unsure about the long-term security of who is in charge at St James’ Park.

Despite the club’s mixed start to the season, Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness exclusively told Football Insider that Newcastle are still backing Howe.

The former Bournemouth manager has had success in the Champions League and the EFL Cup this campaign, yet the Toon are currently languishing 14th in the Premier League.

Given his delivery of the EFL Cup last season, Howe definitely has credit in the bank and will almost certainly be expected to turn things around in the league.
