Sources: Newcastle United ‘furious’ at new rules – deals could collapse
Newcastle United chiefs are said to be ‘furious’ at the new associated-party transaction rules introduced by the Premier League, sources have told Football Insider.
Premier League clubs narrowly voted to introduce new regulations that are designed to stop clubs from signing commercial partnerships with companies associated with their ownership.
It is understood that Newcastle were one of six clubs to vote against the new regulations alongside Manchester City, Sheffield United, Chelsea, Everton and Nottingham Forest.
Newcastle struck a multi-year shirt sponsorship deal with Sela in June 2023 worth £25million a season – but similar deals in the future could now be prohibited.
The new regulations come at a time when Newcastle are pushing to increase their off-pitch revenue following their Saudi Arabian-backed takeover in 2021.
Newcastle United may have to pull plug on multiple deals under new rules
The Magpies revealed in their 2022-23 accounts that they had increased commercial revenue by 66 percent up to £43.9million.
Sources have told Football Insider that senior figures at St James’ Park are ‘furious’ at the new regulations as there is a feeling that they are designed to stop the club from challenging the established elite.

Multiple clubs in the Premier League already benefit from associated-party deals, including Manchester City, who reportedly are ready to take legal action against the Premier League over the vote.
Four of City’s 10 most lucrative commercial deals share links to the United Arab Emirates and the club’s ownership group.
