Sources: Newcastle United ready to terminate Matthew Bondswell deal, Barnsley submitting offer

Barnsley are set to submit an offer for Newcastle United defender Matthew Bondswell before the close of the transfer window, sources have told Football Insider.

Bondswell, 21, is currently on loan at Newport County, who face Premier League giants Manchester United this weekend in the FA Cup.

Barnsley are hoping to make progress with a permanent swoop for Bondswell once the showdown at Rodney Parade is out of the way.

If the Tykes’ offer proves suitable to Newcastle, the defender’s loan in South Wales will be cut short at the halfway mark.

The left-back has played 29 times across all competitions so far in the 2023-24 campaign, notching two assists.

However, he has managed just five starts in League Two this term.

Bondswell joined Newport last summer (2023) having yet to make his first-team debut at Newcastle since signing for the club in 2021.

The Nottingham-born star came through the ranks at Forest before leaving for RB Leipzig as a 16-year-old.

He failed to make a senior appearance during his time in Germany – but did play seven times in the 2020-21 campaign during a loan at Dutch side FC Dordrecht.

Barnsley

Bondswell has featured 43 times for Newcastle’s Under-21 side since heading back to England but could now seal a permanent move to Barnsley, who are chasing promotion to the Championship.

The Tykes sit fifth in League One under Scottish manager Neill Collins.

In other news, Newcastle have already agreed big-money summer signing.
