Sources: Portsmouth agree deal to sign ex-Arsenal star Matt Macey

Portsmouth have agreed a deal to sign former Arsenal goalkeeper Matt Macey on a free transfer, sources have told Football Insider.

The 29-year-old shot-stopper has been without a club since leaving Premier League outfit Luton Town in September.

The 6ft 7in keeper is now set to return to Fratton Park after spending the second half of last season on loan at Portsmouth.

Portsmouth

Macey joined Pompey in January 2023 and made 21 appearances for the League One side during his loan stint.

He kept 10 clean sheets and only conceded 15 goals, cementing his spot as the first-choice keeper in John Mousinho’s squad.

Macey will join Portsmouth’s promotion push for the second half of the season with the south-coast side currently at the top of the League One table.

As revealed by Football Insider, Portsmouth goalkeeper Joshua Oluwayemi agreed a deal to join Finnish side FC Lahti this January.

Prior to his loan spell at Portsmouth, Macey was at Arsenal until 2021 and went on to spend the 2022-23 season at Kenilworth Road, where his only first-team appearance came in the 3-2 loss to Newport County in the League Cup.

It marked Macey’s second spell at Luton after an initial loan stint back in 2017, where he made 13 appearances for the club.

Macey also spent a full season at Hibernian in the 2021-22 season, where he was consistently the club’s first-choice keeper.

Hibernian

He made 44 appearances for the Scottish side, keeping 14 clean sheets and conceding 51 times.

Macey played a pivotal role in Hibernian’s Scottish Cup run in 2021 and saved a penalty in the final when Hibs lost 1-0 to St Johnstone.
