Sources: Rangers risk losing Goldson on free after rejecting offers

Rangers rejected late-window interest in Connor Goldson despite the uncertainty over his future at the club, Football Insider has learned.

The Glasgow giants risk losing the centre-back, 28, on a free transfer next summer with his current agreement expiring at the end of the season.

Ibrox sources have told Football Insider that the club remain hopeful Goldson will sign a new contract and end speculation over his long-term future.

They wanted the central defender to put pen to paper before the window shut but a deal has yet to be agreed.

That opened the door for late interest from clubs south of the border but Rangers made it clear to Goldson and his representatives that they would not entertain any offers, even the ones that came in late.

The defender is considered too important to Steven Gerrard’s side and their hopes of a second consecutive league title to have let him go in the window that shut yesterday.

Goldson now holds all the aces in contract negotiations as he can use his expiring deal to sign a pre-contract with a new club in January or head out on a free next summer.

But options were more palatable to the Rangers board than losing him for even a multi-million pound fee this summer.

Gerrard has built his team around the centre-back, who has barely missed a match during his three years at the club.

Now in his fourth season, Goldson has racked up a remarkable 171 appearances for Rangers and has started all nine of their matches this season.
