Sources: Rangers set sights on deal to sign Cameron Ashia

Rangers have set their sights on a deal to sign Huddersfield Town star Cameron Ashia ahead of the summer transfer window.

The 20-year-old is set to be out of contract at the end of the season and has not agreed new terms with the Terriers, placing a number of clubs on high alert.

Rangers believe they would be able to tempt the attacking midfielder to make the move up to Scotland and could offer him a pre-contract deal to beat rivals to his signature.

As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Transfer Insider podcast, securing a deal for Ashia would be seen as a smart piece of business at Ibrox.

Rangers are not the only club interested in the Huddersfield star, however, and will face stiff competition if he does not extend his stay at the Accu Stadium.

Rangers set sights on deal to sign Cameron Ashia

Rangers’ summer transfer plans will in large part be dictated by their performance in the league as they remain in a race with Hearts and Celtic for the title.

Winning the league and achieving Champions League qualification would provide a significant boost to their spending power, but players are being identified in the meantime.

Ashia has emerged on Rangers’ radar thanks to his availability, with the potential move seen as a market opportunity that they could benefit from.

Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained: “Yeah, again, he’s a player that I think a lot of clubs will probably be looking at due to his contract situation.

“He’s out of contract at Huddersfield in the summer as well, so he could be lured away for minimal compensation if he was to make that move up to Scotland.

“Ashia is obviously a young player and is highly regarded at Huddersfield but maybe has not made as many starts as he would have hoped this season.

“But there is a real potential there and Rangers will be doing their homework on a number of players ahead of this summer.

“If they can sign a top young player who’s 19 right now for free in the summer, it’ll be real smart piece of business by Rangers.

“Rangers have had success previously signing players from the EFL. So I’m sure he’s one of a number of players that is on their list for the summer window.”

Rangers race Celtic to sign David Watson

Ashia is not the only out-of-contract star being linked with a move to Ibrox this summer, as Rangers continue to assess the market to bolster their squad.

Football Insider revealed on 20 February that Rangers are interested in Kilmarnock star David Watson, who has yet to extend his stay at Rugby Park.

The 21-year-old is on the radar of both Rangers and Celtic, as well as a number of English clubs, after impressing in the Scottish Premiership.

The attacking midfielder has has registered three goals and one assist in 25 Premiership appearances so far this season and remains a crucial player for Kilmarnock.

He recently confessed he was not currently considering his future and plans to continue playing at his best while leaving contract and transfer plans to his agent.
