Sources: Rangers star Scott Arfield expected to agree new contract

Scott Arfield is expected to sign a contract extension at Rangers, sources have told Football Insider.

The 34-year-old is one of eight senior Gers players whose contracts are set to expire at the end of the season, but the midfielder has held talks with the club about extending his stay at Ibrox.

Manager Michael Beale values Arfield’s experience and leadership in midfield and is keen to keep hold of the Canada international beyond the summer window.

It is increasingly likely he will sign an extension, sources say, but there is no agreement yet in place.

Arfield has had to accept a more limited role under both Giovanni van Bronckhorst and Beale this season, with the midfielder playing a full 90-minute match just twice in the Premiership this season.

Beale has also dropped Arfield from his matchday squad in the last four Premiership fixtures, with his last league outing coming in the 3-2 win over Kilmarnock in January.

But Arfield has still tallied up an impressive 30 appearances across all competitions this season, scoring seven goals and assisting one.

It takes his total appearances for the club up to 220, with 41 goals and 19 assists to his name during his time in Glasgow.

Arfield was crucial to Rangers’ league-winning campaign in 2021/22 when he worked under Steven Gerrard and was coached by Beale.

He also helped Rangers to the 2022 Scottish Cup, starting in the final alongside Steven Davis and John Lundstram before being withdrawn with 10 minutes left on the clock.

Prior to his time at Ibrox, Arfield spent five seasons with current Championship leaders Burnley, three years at Huddersfield Town and three seasons with Falkirk – the team he graduated from in 2007.
