Sources: Rangers to announce first deal tonight – four signings close

Rangers are set to kickstart their summer overhaul by announcing their first signing on Wednesday night (24 May), sources have told Football Insider.

Michael Beale has made no secret of the task ahead of him in the off-season, previously claiming the upcoming window will be the club’s “biggest in years”.

Rangers confirmed on Tuesday (23 May) that Ryan Kent, Allan McGregor, Alfredo Morelos, Scott Arfield and Filip Helander will all exit the club when their contracts expire at the end of this month.

It is believed that the first of the Gers’ new recruits will be made official on Wednesday following weeks of negotiations with the first wave of targets.

Football Insider revealed on 14 May that Rangers scheduled a medical for defender Dujon Sterling after he rejected offers from Chelsea and Stoke City to sign for the Glasgow giants on a four-year deal.

This site also revealed (8 May) that Kieran Dowell has undergone a medical and signed a three-year Ibrox deal after his departure from Championship side Norwich.

A well-placed source has told Football Insider that on-loan Man United goalkeeper Jack Butland and Los Angeles FC star Jose Cifuentes are also close to sealing moves to Glasgow.

Rangers boss Beale has spoken publicly about the need for major reinforcements following another disappointing season.

The Ibrox club are some eight points adrift of rivals Celtic despite beating the Hoops 3-0 in the last Old Firm meeting last week (13 May).

Rangers also endured the worst-ever Champions League campaign in history – losing all of their group games and conceding 22 goals in the process.

Beale has chosen to kickstart his overhaul ahead of the 2022-23 campaign’s conclusion as the Gers will need to enter Europe’s elite club competition via two rounds of qualifiers in August.

This summer will also represent the 42-year-old’s first pre-season with the Rangers players after he succeeded Giovanni van Bronckhorst in November 2022.
