Sources: Salford City set to name Man United U23s boss Neil Wood as new manager

Manchester United U23s boss Neil Wood is in talks with Salford City over the vacant manager’s job, Football Insider understands.

Salford are searching for a new manager following the departure of Gary Bowyer on Tuesday (17 May).

An industry source has told Football Insider the club are keen to make a quick announcement and they are ready to name Wood as their new boss.

The club’s Class of ’92 owners are keen to bring in a new manager with a link to United and the 39-year-old fits the bill.

Ex-Lincoln City boss Michael Appleton was in the frame but the Ammies have instead turned to Wood who has no first-team managerial experience.

He has spent the last three years as Man United’s Under-23s manager, the club where he spent the majority of his playing career.

The former midfielder never made a senior appearance for the club but was a regular member of the reserve team before leaving in 2006.

Salford City decided to sack Bowyer after he guided them to a 10th-place finish in League Two this season.

They ended the campaign seven points outside the play-off places and are now preparing for a fourth consecutive season in England’s fourth-tier.

Man United fans are growing tired

He initially joined the club in March 2021 and helped them finish eighth in the 2021-22 season, two points outside the top seven.

Wood has helped bring through players like Anthony Elanga and Brandon Williams at Old Trafford who have both played senior football for United.
